Jamal Williams Jr. drilled four of his team's seven 3-pointers and finished with 15 points as Texas Tech won its season opener for the 13th straight season.
Carl Blair had a team-high 19 points - including a 15-for-17 effort from the free-throw line - for the Panthers.
Ryan Gesiakowski added 18 points for Prairie View A&M, which was only 5-for-21 from 3-point range.
The Panthers posted a 22-10 run to cut the Red Raiders' lead to 61-53, but Texas Tech kept its advantage with solid free-throw shooting. The Red Raiders connected on 22-of-28 from the line.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Walker became the fourth consecutive Red Raiders basketball coach to collect a win in his debut. Bob Knight, Pat Knight and Billy Gillispie were also victorious. ... Texas Tech defeated Prairie View A&M in a season opener for the third time. The Red Raiders posted a 111-84 triumph in 1995 and an 82-53 victory in 2000. ... Texas Tech, which held a 51-38 lead at halftime, scored more than 50 points in a half for the first time since doing so in the second half versus Georgia Southern on Nov. 23, 2010.
