Isaiah Canaan scored 20 points and Donte Poole scored 13 of his 15 after halftime as No. 10 Murray State rallied from a nine-point second half deficit to beat Morehead State 66-60 Wednesday in Morehead, Ky. to remain one of only two undefeated teams in the nation.
The Racers (19-0, 7-0 OVC) had their closest call in almost a month and did not take the lead for good until Canaan hit a 3-pointer with 3:56 remaining to give Murray State a 57-55 advantage.
The Racers remain perfect and face their next challenge Saturday at SIU-Edwardsville. Murray State also snapped a three-game losing streak at Morehead State (9-11, 3-4 OVC) as the Racers were the first ranked team to ever play in Johnson Arena.
Poole, the reigning Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week, had just two points in the first half as Murray State fell behind 15-4 and had to play catch up the rest of the way. Jewuan Long added 11 points for the Racers, who outscored Morehead State 23-16 from the free throw line, led by Canaan who connected on 10 of 11.
Drew Kelly led the Eagles with 20 points but battled foul trouble most of the night. He picked up his fourth foul with 10:40 remaining and Morehead State leading 46-39 but the Eagles could not hold on. Kelly fouled out with 3:03 left. Lamont Austin matched his career-high for Morehead State with 11 points and four steals.
