Mustapha Farrakhan and K.T. Harrell scored 15 of their combined 40 points during a late first-half run, and Virginia put on a 3-point shooting display in the first half to pull away for a 72-64 victory over visiting Georgia Tech Saturday afternoon.
Joe Harris had 11 points and eight rebounds for the Cavaliers (11-8, 2-3 ACC), who snapped a three-game losing skid and finally held a second-half lead after blowing three straight to North Carolina, Duke and Boston College.
Virginia held a 25-24 lead with 5:41 left in the first half before closing on an 18-5 run. Farrakhan drained a 3-pointer and added a three-point play during the spurt. Harrell tallied seven points and Harris drained a shot from the arc.
Virginia drained seven of eight 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes and finished 10 of 15 from beyond the arc.
Harris and Sammy Zeglinski drained consecutive shots from the arc early in the second half to push the bulge to 51-33, and the Cavaliers cruised the rest of the way.
Farrakhan finished with 23 points and tied a career high with five assists, and Harrell added 17 on 5-of-8 shooting.
Versatile guard Iman Shumpert had 18 points, nine rebounds and four assists for Georgia Tech (9-9, 2-3 ACC), which had a two-game winning streak snapped and fell to 0-6 on the road.
The Yellow Jackets will get a chance to make up some ground in the conference when they play four of their next five at home, starting Tuesday against Virginia Tech.
