Matt Gatens scored 11 of his game-high 19 points in the second half as Iowa held on for its first road win of the season 59-52 over intrastate rival Drake on Saturday night in Des Moines, Iowa.
Iowa (6-5) scored the first 14 points of the game and looked like it would have an easy time of it before Drake (4-5) rallied to cut the Hawkeyes halftime lead to 24-19.
The Bulldogs hit five of their first eight shots in the second half to take a 32-28 lead with 14:34 remaining after a basket by Rayvonte Rice.
Gatens' 3-pointer with 10:54 broke a 38-38 tie to give Iowa the lead for good as the Hawkeyes snapped a two-game losing streak at Drake’s Knapp Center.
The loss halted a modest two-game winning streak for the Bulldogs, who had won three of the last four meetings.
Gatens, who was the only Iowa player in double figures, was 7 for 13 from the field, including three 3-pointers.
Melsahn Basabe and Zach McCabe had nine points apiece for the Hawkeyes, while Jarryd Cole grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds as Iowa enjoyed a 34-26 advantage on the boards.
Drake, which was outscored at the free throw line 17-5, was led by Rice and Ryan Wedel’s 14 points apiece.
