Spurs 105, Grizzlies 83: Tony Parker had 20 points and nine assists and Kawhi Leonard scored 18 points as host San Antonio dominated Memphis in the opening contest of the Western Conference finals.
Danny Green scored 16 points and Matt Bonner had 12 points on four 3-pointers as the Spurs set a franchise playoff record with 14 3-pointers. Game 2 is Tuesday in San Antonio.
Quincy Pondexter scored 17 points off the bench to lead the Grizzlies. Marc Gasol had 15 points and Mike Conley scored 14 but Zach Randolph had just two points on 1-of-8 shooting.
The Spurs were in control most of the way but Memphis showed life when Pondexter scored eight straight points and Jerryd Bayless followed with a dunk to cut San Antonio’s lead to 62-56 with 3:43 left in the third quarter. Manu Ginobili responded with a 3-pointer to start a quarter-ending 11-1 surge, and the lead topped out at 28 in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.
Memphis scored the first basket of the game before San Antonio scored the next nine and led 31-14 at the end of the opening quarter. The lead reached 20 on Parker’s basket midway through the second quarter before the Spurs settled for a 51-37 edge at the break.
GAME NOTEBOOK: San Antonio was 14-for-29 from 3-point range with Bonner (4-for-6), Leonard (4-for-5) and Green (3-for-6) going a combined 11-for-17. … Randolph’s lone basket was on a putback with 9:26 to play. … Spurs PF Tim Duncan had 10 rebounds but tallied just six points, failing to reach double digits for only the seventh time in 201 career postseason games.
