Padres 5, Marlins 4: Chris Denorfia recorded two hits and knocked in a pair of runs while Robbie Erlin struck out seven in 6 1/3 scoreless innings before host San Diego held off a late rally to take three of four in the series.
Will Venable homered among two hits, Seth Smith delivered a pair of hits and an RBI and Yonder Alonso added two singles for the Padres. Erlin (2-4) scattered five hits and did not walk a batter while throwing a career-high 107 pitches and Huston Street loaded the bases in the ninth before notching his 11th save.
Christian Yelich homered and singled, Giancarlo Stanton went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 13 games and Jeff Baker had two hits and two RBIs for the Marlins. Henderson Alvarez (2-3), who tossed two shutouts in his previous four starts, yielded five runs on seven hits over four innings.
Venable hit the second pitch he saw from Alvarez over the right-field fence to lead off the first inning for the Padres. San Diego extended that advantage with four in the fourth on an RBI single by Alexi Amarista with one out, a two-run base hit by Denorfia and Smith’s run-scoring single - both with two down.
Yelich’s solo shot over the right-field fence off Dale Thayer opened the eighth while Reed Johnson (two hits) and Stanton followed with singles. One out later, Baker drilled a two-run triple to right and scored on a groundout by Adeiny Hechavarria (two hits) to make it 5-4 before Joaquin Benoit struck out Jarrod Saltalamacchia to end the inning.
GAME NOTEBOOK: San Diego’s pitchers set a franchise record for a four-game series with 48 strikeouts.
