Astros 5, Mariners 2: Max Stassi drove in two runs and Nick Tropeano won his major-league debut as visiting Houston defeated Seattle for the second straight night.
Jose Altuve and Alex Presley each had two hits and an RBI for the Astros, who have won eight of their last 10 games. Altuve reached 200 hits on the campaign while raising his major league-leading average to .336.
Mike Zunino recorded a two-run double for the Mariners, who fell one-half game behind Detroit for the American League’s second wild-card spot. Hisashi Iwakuma (14-7) struggled, yielding four runs and six hits in 4 1/3 innings after winning his previous five decisions.
Tropeano (1-0) allowed two runs and four hits while striking out five in five-plus innings. Darin Downs pitched two hitless frames, Jose Veras tossed a perfect eighth and Tony Sipp worked around a hit in the ninth to earn his fourth save.
Houston struck for three runs in the second inning on a two-run single by Stassi and an RBI double by Jonathan Villar before Seattle pulled within one on Zunino’s two-run double in the bottom of the frame. The Astros made it 4-2 in the fifth on Altuve’s run-scoring double and added another run in the eighth on Presley’s single to left field.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Altuve singled in the seventh for his 200th hit as he joins Craig Biggio (210 in 2000) as the only Houston players to reach the plateau. … Seattle CF Austin Jackson struck out in all four of his at-bats. … Presley had been hitless in seven at-bats since returning from an oblique injury before going 2-for-4.
