Royals 3, Yankees 1: Billy Butler and David Lough clubbed solo homers to back seven strong innings from James Shields as visiting Kansas City beat New York for the second straight night.
Shields (4-6) overcame a shaky first inning and allowed one run on five hits to win for only the second time since April 30. He retired the final 13 batters he faced before Tim Collins worked a scoreless eighth and Greg Holland retired the side in the ninth for his 22nd save in 24 chances.
CC Sabathia (9-7) allowed three runs on seven hits in his 37th career complete game as the Yankees suffered their third straight defeat following a six-game winning streak.
Robinson Cano accounted for New York's only run with an RBI single in the first. The Yankees had three straight singles to open the first and four hits overall in the inning against Shields but managed to score just once.
Lough broke up Sabathia's shutout bid with a leadoff homer in the sixth and Butler put the Royals ahead with a leadoff blast in the seventh - his second homer in as many nights and eighth of the season. Kansas City tacked on an insurance run on Eric Hosmer's RBI double in the eighth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez is expected to be one of up to 20 players suspended next week by Major League Baseball, according to a report by ESPN's "Outside The Lines." The players facing punishment have been linked to performance-enhancing drugs supplied by the former owner of the Biogenesis clinic in South Florida. ... Royals LHP Bruce Chen will return to the starting rotation on Friday, taking the spot of RHP Luis Mendoza. ... Sabathia surrendered his 19th and 20th homers of the season, putting him two shy of his career high set in 2012.
