Diamondbacks 3, Marlins 1: Cody Ross hit a three-run homer in the eighth and Josh Collmenter came through with six scoreless innings of relief as Arizona took the rubber match from visiting Miami.
Collmenter was summoned after starter Trevor Cahill was hit in the hip by a comebacker in the first inning and could not make it through the leadoff batter in the second. Collmenter ended up striking out seven and allowed one hit.
Marlins rookie Jose Fernandez (4-4) matched Collmenter into the eighth but walked two before being pulled and replaced by left-hander Mike Dunn. That prompted Arizona to counter with a pinch hitter in the right-handed Ross, who belted a 1-2 slider into the stands in left for a 3-0 lead.
Miami made things interesting in the ninth inning against Diamondbacks closer Heath Bell. Justin Ruggiano led off with a home run and the next two batters reached before Bell retired three in a row to lock up his 13th save.
Fernandez ended up charged with two runs on three hits in 7 1/3 innings. David Hernandez (4-4) picked up the win with a scoreless eighth inning.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Marlins will continue their road trip with a four-game series at San Francisco starting Thursday while the Diamondbacks will get Thursday off before welcoming the Cincinnati Reds to town. … Miami 1B Logan Morrison (back) did not start after playing the first two games of the series. He appeared as a pinch hitter in the ninth and struck out to end the game. … Cahill was diagnosed with a bruised right hip and is day-to-day.
