The Cardinals hit five homers in all, including the first for rookie right-hander Shelby Miller (7-3), who struck out nine in six innings and allowed two runs and six hits while walking none. Daniel Descalso contributed three hits, including a two-run homer in the fourth, and Matt Holliday clubbed a two-run shot in the first inning for the Cardinals.
Diamondbacks starter Ian Kennedy (3-4) allowed a career-high 10 earned runs and 13 hits in four innings. Gerardo Parra had three hits and two runs scored and Didi Gregorius and Cliff Pennington each had two hits and an RBI for Arizona.
After both teams scored twice in the first inning, the Cardinals jumped on Kennedy in the fourth. Adams went deep to give St. Louis an 8-2 lead and Descalso capped the inning with his home run to make it 10-2.
Miller and leadoff hitter Matt Carpenter hit back-to-back solo shots in the fifth to extend the lead to 12-2. Arizona strung together five consecutive singles in the seventh to trim to the deficit to 12-5 and the Cardinals walked in a pair of runs in the ninth before slamming the door.
