Orioles 9, Nationals 6: Chris Davis went 4-for-4 and homered twice - the second a two-run shot to cap a six-run seventh inning - as host Baltimore rallied to spoil Ryan Zimmerman's first three-homer game.
Nick Markakis also homered and delivered a go-ahead RBI single in the seventh and Steve Pearce hit a two-run shot to start the uprising for the Orioles, who trailed 6-2 in the fifth after Zimmerman's third homer. Davis, who also hit a solo shot in the fourth, has three homers in his last two games and leads the majors with 19.
Washington's Jordan Zimmermann (8-3), who was bidding to become the first nine-game winner in the major leagues, allowed season highs of seven runs and 10 hits in six-plus innings. Roger Bernadina homered for the second consecutive game for the Nationals, who have hit four homers in two straight contests.
Zimmerman made it 1-0 when he sent Chris Tillman's offering into the back bullpen in left-center with two outs in the first inning and put Washington ahead 3-1 with a blast to center field in the fourth. Zimmerman's two-run shot to right with two outs in the fifth gave Washington a 6-2 lead.
Zimmerman failed in his bid to become the 17th player in major-league history to hit four in a game when he struck out in the seventh. Steve Johnson (1-1) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the victory while Jim Johnson worked a perfect ninth for his 16th save in 20 chances.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Tillman yielded a season-high six runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings to snap a string of six straight quality starts. ... Zimmerman joined Adam Dunn (2010) and Alfonso Soriano (2006) as players who have hit three home runs in Nationals history. He was also the second player in the majors to hit three Wednesday - Dioner Navarro accomplished the feat in the Cubs' 9-3 victory over the White Sox. ... Orioles 2B Ryan Flaherty was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk earlier Wednesday and delivered an RBI double in his first at-bat to tie the game in the second. He finished 2-for-4 after leading off the seventh with a single.
