Cubs 4, Dodgers 3: David DeJesus walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th inning as Chicago took the weekend series rubber match after a long rain delay at Wrigley Field.
Darwin Barney led off the bottom of the 11th with a double, and Los Angeles reliever Jamey Wright (1-2) then filled the bases by intentionally walking Welington Castillo and hitting pinch hitter Jeff Samardzija. DeJesus, who was thrown out at the plate as the potential winning run in the ninth inning, pushed the decisive run across when he took an inside pitch on a 3-2 count.
Rafael Dolis (2-2) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win for Chicago.
Pinch hitter Ian Stewart reached on a one-out single in the ninth against Dodgers closer Javy Guerra, who then walked DeJesus to put the winning run on base. Tony Campana doubled to right, scoring Stewart with the tying run, but DeJesus was gunned down trying to score and Starlin Castro then struck out to end the inning.
Starting pitcher Aaron Harang got the Dodgers on the board first with an RBI fielder’s choice in the second inning. Juan Rivera added a two-run homer in the top of the third to make it a 3-0 game before Castro answered with a two-run single in the bottom of the inning to get the Cubs within one.
Harang scattered seven hits over six innings, striking out two and walking three. Chicago starter Travis Wood pitched six innings, allowing three hits and walking three while striking out four.
Los Angeles center fielder Matt Kemp was a late scratch from the starting lineup due to tightness in his left hamstring. His streak of 392 consecutive games played, the longest in the major leagues, was kept alive when he flied out as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning.
