Padres 4, Braves 1: Chase Headley celebrated being named National League player of the week by hitting a homer and driving in two runs, and Eric Stults pitched into the eighth inning as visiting San Diego won the opener of a four-game series.
The Padres, whose six-game winning streak ended Sunday at Pittsburgh, won for the eighth time in 10 games. Stults (3-2) went 7 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and one run with no walks and three strikeouts.
Atlanta starter Mike Minor (6-9) allowed nine hits and three runs in six innings, walking none and striking out three. The Braves have lost consecutive games for the first time since July 22-23.
Headley, who hit .333 last week with three homers and 11 RBIs, drove in Stults with a fifth-inning single to left, staking San Diego to a 2-0 lead. Yonder Alonso’s single to center plated Chris Denorfia in the sixth to put the Padres ahead 3-0.
Headley’s 19th homer of the season, a solo shot to center off Chad Durbin in the seventh, made it 4-0. Dale Thayer pitched the ninth for his sixth save.
Atlanta's Martin Prado finished 2-for-4, his two-out triple to right in the eighth scoring Michael Bourn.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The first pitch was delayed 25 minutes by rain. … Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez announced Monday the Braves will employ a six-man rotation starting Friday until the end of the month. … San Diego’s Logan Forsythe, who has played mostly second base this season, started at shortstop for the first time this season.
