Lightning 1, Canadiens 0 (OT): Tyler Johnson scored 1:03 into overtime as visiting Tampa Bay edged Montreal for its fourth consecutive victory.
Johnson zipped around the net, took a shot, corralled his own rebound at the right side of the cage and his pass went in off Montreal defenseman Tom Gilbert’s skate for his 25th goal. Ben Bishop turned aside 19 shots for his third shutout of the season and 11th career to improve to 8-1-2 against the Canadiens.
Carey Price made 35 saves – many of them dazzling – for Montreal, which gained a point to remain one ahead of Tampa Bay for first place in the Atlantic Division despite falling to 1-2-2 in its last five contests. The Canadiens, who have lost all three games to the Lightning this season, killed all four power plays against.
Price stopped all 10 shots he faced in the first period, including point-blank chances by captain Steven Stamkos and Johnson. The goaltending display continued in the second session as Price made 13 more stops and Bishop 11, including a stellar save on Jacob De La Rose's rebound attempt with 2:15 left.
Price made big stops on Johnson and Nikita Kucherov in front early on and flashed the glove to deny Ryan Callahan just past the midway point of the third period. The Lightning had a 10-2 edge in shots during the third period and had three in overtime before defensemen Jason Garrison and Braydon Coburn assisted on Johnson’s goal.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Johnson has three goals and six assists during a seven-game point streak. … Montreal D Alexei Emelin (shoulder) missed his 10th straight game, but could return to the lineup next week. … Tampa Bay LW Ondrej Palat left the game after the second period with a lower-body injury and did not return. … The Canadiens had a 36-24 edge in the faceoff circle.
