Flames 5, Oilers 2: Mason Raymond scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period before completing his third career hat trick as visiting Calgary spoiled Edmonton's season opener.
Jiri Hudler recorded a goal and an assist while Joe Colborne set up three tallies as the Flames rebounded from Wednesday's season-opening loss to Vancouver. Defenseman T.J. Brodie added an insurance goal on the power play in the final minute and Karri Ramo turned aside 38 shots for Calgary in the opener of its six-game road trip.
Teddy Purcell and Taylor Hall scored power-play goals for the Oilers, who rallied from an early two-goal deficit before Raymond's third-period heroics thwarted their comeback. Ben Scrivens made 21 saves for Edmonton, which dominated play for much of the contest and held a 40-26 advantage in shots.
The Flames stunned the Oilers with a pair of early goals one minute apart, with Raymond deflecting captain Mark Giordano's shot past Scrivens at 3:16 before Sean Monahan set up Hudler for his second tally in as many games. Purcell cut the deficit in half during a man advantage just over 7 1/2 minutes later
Hall tied it during a 5-on-3 at 11:25 of the second period, accepting a feed from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and whistling a one-timer from the right faceoff circle past Ramo. Raymond snapped the deadlock 4:23 into the third, blasting a slap shot past the waving glove of Scrivens, before completing the hat trick just over 10 minutes later by steering home a pass at the doorstep from Colborne.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Members of Edmonton's 1984 team, featuring Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier, were in attendance in celebration of the 30-year anniversary of the franchise's first Stanley Cup championship. ...
