Cassius Winston scored 20 points, and No. 3 Michigan State held UCLA to 39.3 percent shooting en route to a 75-62 win in the fifth-place game at the Maui Invitational on Wednesday.

The Spartans (5-2) recovered from Monday's opening loss to Virginia Tech to leave Maui 2-1. They led UCLA almost throughout in the consolation bracket championship, and held a double-digit-point advantage for much of the second half.

The Bruins (5-3) suffered through their third game with long stretches of offensive inefficiency. The Bruins went cold in the final nine minutes of a 78-63 loss Monday night to BYU, and they scored just 38 points by the under-12 minutes media timeout in Tuesday's 74-48 rout of Chaminade.

Against Michigan State, UCLA shot a dismal 2 of 15 from behind the 3-point line. Moments of stagnation, then exchanging baskets with Michigan State, kept the Bruins from pulling closer than nine points down the stretch.

Winston finished well at the Maui Invitational after scoring just seven points in the opener. He scored 28 points in Tuesday's win over Georgia, a contest played at a markedly faster pace than Wednesday's finale.

Xavier Tillman joined Winston in double figures with 14 points. In one sequence with less than four minutes remaining, he blocked a shot at one end, ran the floor and finished the break with a rim-rattling dunk.

Tillman made his third block two minutes later, setting up a Rocket Watts transition 3-pointer. Watts scored 12 points.

Chris Smith, with 13 points, was UCLA's third different leading scorer for the tournament. One of those scoring leaders -- Jaime Jaquez Jr., who produced a double-double off the bench on Tuesday -- made the start Wednesday. He scored seven points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Four Bruins scored in double figures, with Cody Riley adding 11 points, and Tyger Campbell and Prince Ali each chipping in 10 points.

UCLA scored just two fast-break points. Michigan State yielded few opportunities, committing just six turnovers.
