SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Maybe it's a good thing that the Syracuse Orange left the Big East Conference after all.
The St. John's Red Storm, one of the nation's top 3-point shooting teams, sank 12 3-pointers Wednesday night as they walloped the Orange 93-60 before 18,363 stunned fans at the Carrier Dome. Syracuse, once one of the perennial Big East powers, is 0-3 this season against middle-of-the-pack -- or worse -- Big East teams Connecticut, Georgetown and St. John's.
It was Syracuse's worst loss at the Carrier Dome since it opened in 1980.
In winning their second consecutive game at the Dome for the first time since the late 1990s, the Red Storm (6-7) shot 41.4 percent from beyond the arc (12 for 29) and 53.1 percent overall. Bashir Ahmed paced St. John's with 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting, while Shamorie Ponds tallied 19 and Malik Ellison added 16. The Red Storm forced 19 turnovers and held a whopping 32-9 edge in points off turnovers.
Syracuse, now in the Atlantic Coast Conference, dropped to 7-5 after opening the season ranked No. 19 in the nation. Syracuse has not defeated a team from a Power Five conference or the Big East this season.
Tyler Lydon, who returned to the lineup after straining his right Achilles in Syracuse's previous game Monday, led the Orange with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and DaJuan Coleman also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Syracuse sliced St. John's lead to six, 41-35, early in the second half, but the Red Storm answered every Orange push with a 3-pointer that increased their lead back into the double digits. St. John's delivered the knockout punch with an 18-2 spurt that boosted the Red Storm's lead to 74-48 with about eight minutes remaining.
St. John's used a 19-2 run midway through the first half to build a 39-29 lead at intermission. The Red Storm connected on four 3-pointers during that stretch and sank seven from beyond the arc in the first half, including three by Ponds.
Syracuse's Taurean Thompson helped Syracuse stay close by scoring 10 first-half points and all eight of the Orange's points in a 10:05 stretch when St. John's turned a 12-10 deficit into a 33-20 lead.
