Jorge Soler homered for the second consecutive night, bashing his 40th of the season, as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Detroit Tigers 5-4 Wednesday night.
The Royals are no longer the only team in Major League Baseball without a player ever to hit 40 home runs in a year.
One night after breaking the club's single-season homer record, Soler caromed one off the Royals Hall of Fame beyond the left field wall. The exit velocity off his bat was 115 mph.
Hunter Dozier and Alex Gordon each had three hits for Kansas City.
Royals starter Jakob Junis (9-12) had one bad inning in which he gave up three runs on four hits, but otherwise he was stellar. He allowed a total of four runs on seven hits in seven-plus innings, with one walk and four strikeouts.
Ian Kennedy pitched the ninth for his 26th save in 30 chances. One night after blowing his first save in his last 15 opportunities, he tossed a perfect inning.
Detroit's Edwin Jackson (3-9) gave up four runs on nine hits over five innings. He walked one and fanned three.
The Tigers rocked Junis for three runs in the second inning on four straight hits. Christin Stewart led off with a single, and Jeimer Candelario followed with a double, sending Stewart to third. Harold Castro drove in both runners with a double, and he scored on a single by Dawel Lugo.
Kansas City threatened in the third and finally got to Jackson in the fourth, using a similar formula to the Tigers' scoring in the second.
Dozier and Gordon singled to open the inning, and Dozier scored on Ryan McBroom's single, giving McBroom his first career RBI. Gordon, who went to third on the single, then scored on a wild pitch.
After Soler's 450-foot blast tied it in the fifth, Dozier tripled and scored on Gordon's infield single, giving the Royals a 4-3 lead.
Adalberto Mondesi extended the lead to 5-3 in the sixth with a two-out single, scoring Brett Phillips, who had doubled.
The Tigers drew within one on Miguel Cabrera's RBI single in the eighth.
