Franmil Reyes drove in three runs with a pair of homers off Erik Swanson and Austin Hedges ricocheted a two-run homer off the glove of Seattle center fielder Mallex Smith on Tuesday night as the host San Diego Padres defeated the Mariners 6-3 in the opener of a two-game series.
The loss was only the third for Seattle in 14 road games this season and marked the first time this year that the Mariners failed to score at least five runs in a road game.
Reyes capped a three-run Padres' second inning with a two-run, 402-foot shot to left center off Swanson. He capped the second multi-homer game of his career with a two-out shot to left center to give the Padres a 4-2 lead in the sixth.
After Reyes' second homer, Ian Kinsler reached on a two-base throwing error by Mariners' third baseman Ryon Healy.
Hedges then greeted right-handed reliever Cory Gearrin with a deep drive to center. Smith raced back to his right and appeared to have a shot at making a leaping catch just in front of the wall when the ball bounced off his glove and over the wall.
Wil Myers opened the Padres' three-run second with a bunt single. Eric Hosmer followed with a run-scoring double to right-center ahead of Reyes' first homer of the game.
The Mariners took advantage of a rare spell of wildness by Padres' left-handed rookie starter Nick Margevicius (2-2) to score twice in the top of the fifth. Margevicius walked the bases loaded ahead of a two-run single by Tim Beckham.
Margevicius, who issued only 17 walks in 135 minor league innings last season, finished with a line of two runs given up on four hits and five walks with four strikeouts in five innings to get credit for the win.
Kirby Yates, the fifth pitcher deployed by the Padres, picked up his National League-leading 11th save, striking out one in a perfect ninth.
Swanson (0-2) took the loss, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits and no walks with three strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.
