Pitchers Jimmy Yacabonis, Paul Fry and Mychal Givens combined for a one-hit shutout as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Houston Astros 4-0 on Sunday at Camden Yards in the season finale for both teams.
Trey Mancini, Tim Beckham and Renato Nunez each drove in a run for Baltimore, which finished 47-115 and set a franchise record for losses. A number of changes could be looming for the Orioles, where Buck Showalter has served as manager since 2010.
Houston finished with a record of 103-59 - a franchise record for wins-- and is headed to the ALDS to play the Cleveland Indians.
Charlie Morton started and threw three shutout innings for the Astros. He has had trouble with his shoulder recently, and Houston wants to make sure he's right for the playoffs.
In fact, manager AJ Hinch pulled most of his starters as the game went on.
Yacabonis went four shutout innings at the start for Baltimore. He gave up a fourth-inning single to Jose Altuve for Houston's only hit.
Fry (1-2) took over in the fifth and threw three hitless innings to earn his first major-league victory. Givens threw the final two innings.
The Orioles got all their offense with a four-run fourth inning against Brad Peacock (3-5). Mancini made it 1-0 with an RBI single and then scored from first on Beckham's double to left.
Nunez got the third consecutive run-scoring hit when he also doubled to left. Nunez later scored on catcher Max Stassi's throwing error while trying to nail DJ Stewart at second on a steal. That gave the Orioles a 4-0 lead.
This could have been the final game for Adam Jones as an Oriole. His contract is over, and the fans gave him repeated ovations. Showalter let him start in center field before moving him back to right in the second inning.
Jones led the team out on to the field before the game, but his teammates stayed back and all stood clapping at the dugout. Showalter then pulled him as the top of the ninth started, getting an ovation from both dugouts and all the fans one last time.
