Wade LeBlanc, who signed a contract extension earlier in the day, pitched seven strong innings Tuesday night as the host Seattle Mariners defeated the Los Angeles Angels 4-1 at Safeco Field for their eighth straight victory.

LeBlanc (4-0) allowed one run on three hits, walked one and struck out four.

His contract extension covers the 2019 season, with club options through 2022.

The left-hander, in his second stint with the Mariners, has made 20 starts with Seattle without suffering a loss, the third-longest streak to begin a tenure with a single club since 1920. LeBlanc trails only the New York Yankees' Whitey Ford (22 games, 1950-53) and Montreal's Kirk Rueter (22, 1993-94).

Angels left-hander Andrew Heaney (4-6) struggled in the first inning, but was stellar thereafter.

With one out, Jean Segura lined a double to left field. Heaney then walked Mitch Haniger and Nelson Cruz to load the bases.

Kyle Seager lined a one-hopper at right fielder Chris Young, who crumpled to the ground after fielding the ball. Young was able to lob the ball back into the infield, but that allowed Seager to reach second base and two runners to score. Young suffered a left hamstring strain and was forced to leave the game.

Cruz then scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.

Heaney went seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He walked two and tied his career-high with 10 strikeouts.

Cruz led off the eighth with a solo homer off Angels reliever Noe Ramirez to cap the scoring. It was Cruz's 22nd home run of the season.

The Angels scored their lone run in the fourth on Andrelton Simmons' one-out homer, his sixth, to left-center field.

Seattle closer Edwin Diaz pitched a perfect ninth for his major-league-leading 33rd save of the season, striking out Shohei Ohtani to end it.

Ohtani returned from nearly a month on the disabled list (Grade 2 sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow) and served as the Angels' designated hitter, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
