LOS ANGELES -- Noah Syndergaard thought he was dreaming.

The first home run of the game was one thing, but the Mets right-hander made history by hitting a second one out of Dodger Stadium in New York's 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday.

Syndergaard was almost sure someone was going to wake him up.

"This is a dream, it's not real life," he said. "I don't think I ever hit two home runs in Little League. To be able to hit two home runs in a big league ballgame -- especially with a guy like (Dodgers right-hander Kenta) Maeda out there -- is an awesome experience."

By taking Maeda deep twice, including the go-ahead three-run home run in the fifth, Syndergaard became the first major league pitcher since Micah Owings in 2007 to homer twice in a game.

Syndergaard is the first Mets pitcher to accomplish the feat since Walt Terrell did it in 1983 at Wrigley Field.

"I really don't have any answers for what happened at the plate," Syndergaard said. "The coaches are always working with the hitters to try and be able to get a handle on the bat and feel comfortable at the plate. I owe a lot of what happened tonight to those guys."

In addition, Syndergaard (3-2) earned his first win since April 18 at Philadelphia, giving up two runs -- both on solo home runs -- and six hits over eight innings. He struck out six and walked one.

"I felt really comfortable out on the mound today," he said. "I felt real strong. I was able to repeat my delivery pretty easily. It was a great outing, and I feel really good out there."

Maeda (3-2) failed to go at least six innings for the first time in his major league career. He relieved by Chris Hatcher after allowing a single and a double to Lucas Duda and Neil Walker to begin the sixth. Hatcher aided Maeda's cause when he got out of a bases-loaded jam, striking out Syndergaard and Curtis Granderson to end the sixth.

In his eighth major league start, Maeda allowed four runs on six hits while striking out three and walking two.

"He was using his breaking ball a lot tonight and just didn't have that sharpness to it," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "He was working behind hitters and threw a large number of breaking balls. Didn't have the fastball command. The hallmark to that second home run to Syndergaard was a misfire, and the other one was a backdoor breaking ball located down and away. (Syndergaard) is a strong kid."

Jeurys Familia allowed one run in the ninth but recorded the save, his 12th of the season, to tie for the league lead. Adrian Gonzalez led off the inning with a line-drive double to center field, and he scored two batters later on a groundout by Joc Pederson. Familia struck out Yasiel Puig to end the game.

With two on and no outs in the fifth, Syndergaard couldn't get the bunt down. Instead, he got ahold of Maeda's slider on the outside corner and drove it deep to center field.

"When he's supposed to get the bunt down, you'd like to see him get the bunt down," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "But if you're not going to bunt, you might as well get a homer."

Syndergaard he teed off on the first pitch he saw from Maeda in the third inning, sending it over the right field wall for a solo home run to put the Mets up 1-0.

It continued a good hitting week for Mets pitchers. Bartolo Colon hit a home run Saturday at San Diego, and Steven Matz hit an RBI double against Los Angeles on Monday.

In the bottom of the third, Corey Seager hit a solo shot to right field, his third of the season, tying the game at 1-1. Yasmani Grandal broke the tie in the fourth inning with another first-pitch home run, sending Syndergaard's fastball out to right-center.

NOTES: Dodgers LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (left shoulder surgery in May 2015) will start facing live hitters next week, and he is due to begin a rehab assignment the following week. ... Los Angeles INF Howie Kendrick started at third base in place of Justin Turner. Manager Dave Roberts said it was a routine day off for Turner. ... Mets LHP Steven Matz will miss his scheduled start Saturday at Colorado due to elbow soreness, though he has not undergone an MRI exam. RHP Logan Verrett will pitch instead. ... David Wright has drawn a walk in 10 straight games. ... Mets 2B Neil Walker returned to the lineup after missing three games with a deep bone bruise on his shin. He sustained the injury Saturday in San Diego.
