BOSTON -- Hanley Ramirez got better in a hurry and then made Patrick Corbin feel the pain.
Ramirez, on the ground writhing in pain from a lower back injury suffered in a first base collision with New York Yankees rookie Gary Sanchez in Thursday's eighth inning, hit three-run homers off Corbin in the first and second innings to power the Boston Red Sox to a 9-4 interleague win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night.
"I think I don't have to be 100 percent to bat at this point in the season, because we know where we are," Ramirez said after his 20th career multi-homer game, second in less than a month. "We're right there. And it's go time."
There was no way Red Sox manager John Farrell could have expected this after what happened Thursday.
"He responded well to treatment. It didn't look good last night but as we've seen with both he and David (Ortiz), they answer it right back and have been very productive," Farrell said after his team won for the second time in the last six games.
Ortiz fouled a ball off his shin and had to be helped off the field in the ninth inning Wednesday night and then doubled his first time up Thursday. On Friday night, he singled in both the first and second and then hit his first home run in 49 at-bats since July 26 to cap the scoring -- his 26th of the year and the 1,000th extra-base hit of his Red Sox career.
"I think he's one of our leaders and he's 40 years old and he was like 'I'm in there today,'" Ramirez said.
Said Ortiz: "It's August and you want to play in September ... Hopefully this is the beginning of something big."
Ramirez's 15th and 16th homers of the season paved the way for David Price's first win in six starts, his 10th of his first season with his new club.
Farrell said Ramirez texted him in the morning to tell him he'd be ready and he clobbered a 3-0 pitch from Corbin (4-12) to left in a four-run (all unearned), 40-pitch first inning. He then capped a four-run second by sending an 0-2 pitch into the center field bleachers.
"I gotta give credit to the medical staff," Ramirez said. "I think they spent a lot of hours on me today to try to make me feel better and be in the lineup. They did their job and we got a 'W.'"
Ortiz joined Carl Yastrzemski (1,157) and Ted Williams (1,117) as the only players to pound out 1,000 extra-base hits with the team.
"It means I'm getting old," he said. "Hitting extra bases is not easy. And hitting over 1,000 extra bases, it means I probably did well."
Ortiz also reached 90 RBIs for the 12th time in his career.
Price (10-8) gave up a two-run homer to Rickie Weeks in the first and settled in for an eight-inning effort. He yielded a solo homer to Tuffy Gosewisch -- his second home run in as many days -- and allowed 10 hits. On his final pitch, right fielder Mookie Betts hauled in a near homer by Jake Lamb.
Corbin lasted 1 2/3 innings and has gone 0-6 with three no-decisions in his last nine starts, as the last-place Diamondbacks saw their four-game winning streak end.
The first two pitches of the game produced bizarre results. First,
Jackie Bradley Jr., playing with a bum big right toe, tripped and played Jean Segura's fly ball into a triple. On the next pitch, Phil Gosselin lofted a fly to short center. Bradley got a late jump, made a shoestring catch and fired a strike home. Segura came down the line a bit too far and Bryan Holaday relayed Bradley's throw to third to nail Segura.
Paul Goldschmidt then singled and Weeks hit his sixth homer of the year.
Corbin's early nightmare ended a streak of 14 straight scoreless innings by Arizona starters.
"Yeah, so now Archie (Bradley) has to pick it up tomorrow and turn it around," said Arizona manager Chip Hale. "That's what this is all about. We talked about it with the wins or the losses. This one's over, lets' shower it off and get ready for tomorrow."
NOTES: Boston 2B Dustin Pedroia left after two innings because of flu-like symptoms. ... The Diamondbacks transferred C Welington Castillo from the paternity to the bereavement list because of complications in the birth of his second child -- but Castillo tweeted a positive picture during the game. ... Red Sox manager John Farrell said RHP Steven Wright's right shoulder has improved and the hope is he can take his next turn Thursday. ... Diamondbacks RF Yasmany Tomas missed his fifth straight game with a neck injury but could return Saturday night, when Arizina faces Red Sox spot starter RHP Clay Buchholz in Game 2 of the series. It will be Buchholz's first start since July 2. ... RHP Rubby De La Rosa, out since May 25 with an elbow injury, suffered a setback with forearm tightness that will require an MRI.
