Rays 10, Yankees 5 (14): Wil Myers ignited a five-run rally with a tiebreaking RBI single in the 14th inning as visiting Tampa Bay outlasted New York in the longest game ever played between the teams.
Myers finished with three hits and drove in a pair of runs and Evan Longoria and James Loney each had three hits and an RBI to lift the Rays to their third straight victory and send the Yankees to their third loss in a row. Heath Bell (1-1) picked up the win, allowing four hits in 2 1/3 scoreless frames.
Sean Rodriguez, Brandon Guyer, Yunel Escobar and Ryan Hanigan added run-scoring hits in the 14th inning as Tampa Bay prevailed despite failing to protect leads in the eighth and ninth innings with closer Grant Balfour unavailable after saving both ends of a doubleheader sweep Thursday in Boston. New York squandered a chance to win it in the 13th when captain Derek Jeter (0-for-7) grounded out with the bases loaded.
Jacoby Ellsbury collected four hits and an RBI for the Yankees, who wasted three homers - a two-run blast by Brian McCann and solo shots by Mark Teixeira and Alfonso Soriano (three hits) - in the marathon that lasted 5 hours, 49 minutes. Chris Leroux (0-1), the eighth and last pitcher available for New York, allowed all five runs on five hits in the 14th.
Tampa Bay carried a 4-2 lead into the eighth inning but the Yankees tied it in dramatic fashion when Teixeira and Soriano clubbed back-to-back solo homers off Joel Peralta with two outs. Longoria put the Rays back on top with an RBI single off New York closer David Robertson in the top of the ninth, but Ellsbury came through with a two-out single in the bottom of the inning to plate Brian Roberts with the tying run.
GAME NOTEBOOK: LHP David Price went seven strong innings, allowing two runs and striking out eight, while Yankees LHP Vidal Nuno was charged with four runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings. ... Joe Girardi managed his 1,000th game with the Yankees, becoming the seventh active manager to reach that milestone with his current team. Girardi owns the best record (579-421) of that group. ... Rays manager Joe Maddon was ejected in the 13th when umpires reversed a call on a video challenge that turned into a double play for New York. ... Ellsbury stole his 250th career base in the third inning.
