Twins 4, White Sox 3: Joe Mauer doubled in two runs and Kevin Correia turned in six strong innings as Minnesota clinched a series win over visiting Chicago.
Kendrys Morales added an RBI and Brian Dozier recorded two hits for the Twins, who have taken the first three of the four-game series to pull out of last place in the American League Central. Correia (4-8) allowed two runs – one earned – on five hits and a pair of walks while Glen Perkins surrendered a run on a triple and a sacrifice fly in the ninth before striking out Jose Abreu and Adam Dunn to lock up his 19th save.
Andre Rienzo (4-5) started for the White Sox and let a lead slip away in a three-run fifth inning, highlighted by Mauer’s hit. The right-hander was charged with four runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings while Abreu singled in a run among two hits to pace Chicago's offense.
Conor Gillaspie tripled with two outs in the first and scored on Abreu’s single before the White Sox took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Correia hit Gordon Beckham with a pitch with the bases loaded. Minnesota loaded the bases on three straight two-out singles in the bottom of the frame before cutting the deficit in half when Rienzo walked Sam Fuld.
The Twins finally got to Rienzo for multiple runs in the fifth when Danny Santana and Dozier reached with one out in front of Mauer’s deep fly, which made it over the outstretched glove of Alejandro De Aza in left before bouncing off the wall and rolling far enough to plate the pair easily. Morales followed with a bouncing ball through the shift into center to make it a 4-2 gap.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Rienzo dropped to 0-5 with an 8.87 ERA in his last five starts. … Morales got his first start at 1B for the Twins after serving as DH in each of his first 11 games since signing with the team. … Minnesota LH Josh Willingham, who is mired in a 2-for-18 slump, got the day off.
