Pirates 5, Tigers 3: Neil Walker homered for the second straight game and Pedro Alvarez delivered a two-run double as host Pittsburgh rallied to move a season-high 13 games over .500.
Tigers starter Anibal Sanchez (5-5) allowed two hits over the first six innings and took a 3-1 lead into the seventh before Pittsburgh erupted for four runs. Alvarez doubled in two runs and Travis Snider followed with an RBI double before advancing to third on a wild pitch and scoring on Jordy Mercer’s suicide squeeze bunt.
Bryan Morris (2-2) tossed a scoreless seventh inning for the win and ex-Tiger Jason Grilli worked around a leadoff single in the ninth for his 22nd save in as many tries for Pittsburgh, which has won 15 of 19. The Pirates have recorded 18 wins in a calendar month for the first time since going 21-8 in September 1992.
One game after hitting the game-winning homer in the Pirates’ 1-0 victory over Detroit on Tuesday, Walker led off the fourth with his third home run in his last five games.
The Tigers answered in the fifth when Andy Dirks doubled in a run and Miguel Cabrera launched a two-run blast off A.J. Burnett, who allowed three runs over six frames. Cabrera leads the majors with 59 RBIs.
