Indians 5, Twins 1: Nick Swisher hit a two-run homer and Ubaldo Jimenez struck out 13 in 6 2/3 innings as visiting Cleveland locked up the top American League wild-card spot.
Carlos Santana added an RBI double and scored a run for the Indians (92-70), who finished the regular season with 10 straight wins and will host either the Texas Rangers or the Tampa Bay Rays in Wednesday's one-game wild-card playoff.
Jimenez (13-9) cruised through the first six innings scoreless on two hits before running into his first spot of trouble in the seventh. The right-hander ended up charged with one run on five hits for his eighth straight quality start.
Cleveland wasted little time jumping on top as Michael Bourn led off the game with a single to center and Swisher followed by lining a 2-2 fastball off the front row in left field. An error allowed Santana to score in the sixth and Yan Gomes added a sacrifice fly before Santana’s double in the seventh made it 5-0.
Eric Fryer singled in the lone run and Scott Diamond (6-13) was charged with four runs (two earned) on seven hits in six innings for the Twins (66-96), who finished up with six straight losses.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Indians will host the wild card game on Wednesday at 8:07 p.m. ET. … Cleveland 2B Jason Kipnis went 2-for-4 and is 13-for-28 during a seven-game hitting streak. … Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire, who is not under contract for next season, finished up the campaign at 998 career wins.
