Giants 2, Reds 1 (10): Buster Posey scored on a fielding error by Scott Rolen in the 10th inning and visiting San Francisco remained alive in the National League Division Series.
Jonathan Broxton (0-1) opened the inning by allowing back-to-back singles to Posey and Hunter Pence before striking out the next two batters. After a passed ball allowed the runners to advance, Posey scored when Rolen bobbled Joaquin Arias’ grounder to third base.
Sergio Romo (1-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings for the Giants, who took their first lead of the series in the 10th and San Francisco won despite managing only three hits and striking out 16 times. Game 4 of the best-of-five series is Wednesday.
The late-inning drama followed a dominant performance by Reds starter Homer Bailey, who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and matched his career high with 10 strikeouts, including six in a row at one point.
Cincinnati took a first-inning lead on Jay Bruce’s RBI single off Ryan Vogelsong, who settled down and gave up three hits over five innings in his first career postseason start.
Bailey, who allowed one hit and one walk over seven innings, gave up the Giants’ lone run in the third when Gregor Blanco was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and eventually scored on Angel Pagan’s sacrifice fly.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Bailey’s 10 strikeouts is a Reds single-game postseason record. … Cincinnati hasn't won a home playoff game in 17 years. … The Giants will start LHP Barry Zito (15-8, 4.15 ERA) in Game 4 while the Reds haven’t announced their starting pitcher. … The first two batters in the Giants lineup - Angel Pagan and Marco Scutaro - are 2-for-24 in the series. …Cincinnati pitchers retired 10 batters in a row before Posey led off the 10th with a single to right field.
