Mariners 4, Blue Jays 1: Hisashi Iwakuma struck out a career-best 13 in eight innings as host Seattle won its fifth straight game.
Iwakuma (2-2) allowed just one run, four hits and three walks while setting a club record for strikeouts by a rookie as the Mariners won for the 12th time in 18 games. Randy Johnson, Mark Langston and Freddy Garcia shared the former Seattle rookie strikeout record of 12.
After the game, the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired former All-Star closer Brandon League from Seattle for outfielder Leon Landry and right-hander Logan Bawcom. The Mariners also sent right-hander Steve Delabar to Toronto for Eric Thames.
Toronto’s lone run came when Rajai Davis led off the contest with a homer as the Blue Jays were stymied the rest of the way. Starter Ricky Romero (8-8) saw his career-worst losing skid reach seven games as Toronto slipped into last place in the American League East.
Seattle took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first. The first run scored when John Jaso bounced into a double play with the bases loaded, and Kyle Seager drove in the second with a two-out single to left field.
Brett Lawrie’s error gave Seattle a run in the second and the Mariners boosted their lead to three on an RBI double in the fifth by Michael Saunders.
Lucas Luetge retired the final batter for his first career save. Seattle closer Tom Wilhelmsen was away from the team to attend the birth of his first child.
Romero gave up four runs (three earned) and eight hits in six innings. He struck out seven and walked two.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Iwakuma’s 13 strikeouts matched Felix Hernandez for most by a Seattle pitcher this season. … Blue Jays OF Travis Snider was pulled from the field in the bottom of seventh after being traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for RHP Brad Lincoln. … Seager’s two-out RBI was his 37th of the season, best in the AL. … Lawrie struck out in all four at-bats and Davis fanned three times.
