Yankees 3, Braves 0: Ivan Nova pitched seven shutout innings
as visiting New York won for the seventh time in eight games and moved
into a first-place tie with idle Tampa Bay in the American League East.
Atlanta, which has lost two straight after winning eight of nine, put
the leadoff man on base five times in seven innings against Nova (8-2). The right-hander, though, kept the Braves at bay, allowing only five
hits and walking one while striking out six.
Alex Rodriguez doubled with two outs in the first and scored on Robinson Cano’s single to center. Raul Ibanez hit a solo homer, his 10th of the season, leading off the second and Rodriguez scored on a Randall Delgado wild pitch with the bases loaded in the third.
The Braves stayed in it thanks to their defense. Sidearm reliever Cory Gearrin induced inning-ending double-play grounders in the sixth and seventh, and center fielder Michael Bourn robbed Raul Ibanez of a run-scoring double to left-center in the seventh.
The Yankees also made big defensive plays, none bigger than Nick Swisher’s leaping grab of Brian McCann’s blast at the top of the right-field wall with a runner on in the fourth.
Delgado (4-6) walked a career-high six hitters in five shaky innings. The right-hander threw 110 pitches, allowed five hits and struck out five. Atlanta dropped three games behind Washington in the National League East.
GAME NOTEBOOK: New York's Boone Logan got the final two outs in the ninth for his second save. ... New York left 11 runners on base. … Bourn extended his hitting streak to 11 games with an infield single in the fourth.
