Four days after getting clobbered at No. 15 Purdue, the Iowa Hawkeyes started 2017 with an enormous 86-83 overtime victory over the Michigan Wolverines on Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.
Guard Peter Jok added 25 points on 9-of-18 shooting for the Hawkeyes (9-6, 1-1).
Junior forward D.J. Wilson scored a career-high 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting and collected 14 rebounds for the Wolverines (10-4, 0-1).
Michigan had a chance to force a second overtime, but Wilson's 3-point attempt hit the side of the backboard and teammate Zak Irvin lost the ball following an offensive rebound, sealing the win for Iowa.
Guard Jason Bohannon finished with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting and also posted a team-high six assists for the Hawkeyes.
In the extra session, it was Bohannon paving the way for Iowa. First, he hit a jumper to score the first points of the overtime. Then after Michigan took the lead with on a 3-pointer by guard Derrick Walton Jr., Bohannon hit a 3-pointer to give Iowa the lead.
The score was tied at 81-81 when Iowa received the go-ahead bucket on a 3-pointer from Jok with 1:16 left. Jok knocked down a pair of free throws following a steal and lay-up by Walton.
Michigan began to take control of the game in the second half. After being held to a combined three points in the first half, the Wolverines' 1-2 backcourt punch of Walton and Irvin began to heat up and Michigan led by as much as 63-56 with 10:31 remaining in regulation.
With the Wolverines leading 71-69, Bohannon drained a 3-pointer to put Iowa up 72-71 with 1:58 on the clock. Michigan answered with a 3 of its own from Irvin and then the Hawkeyes responded when forward Cordell Pemsl put back a lay-up to tie it at 74-74. Walton lost the ball out of bounds in the closing seconds of the second half, which forced overtime.
The Hawkeyes were in control for the majority of the first half and led by as many as seven points before ultimately taking a 39-36 lead into halftime. One of the main reasons the Wolverines managed to stay within single digits though was the play of Wilson, who scored 11 of their first 13 points.
