Forward Nigel Hayes' three-point play midway through overtime snapped a tie and propelled Wisconsin to a 66-58 upset of No. 14 Syracuse in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Wednesday night at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.
Forward Ethan Happ scored 14 of his team-high 18 points in the second half and overtime for Wisconsin (5-3), which limited Syracuse to one field goal -- Michael Gbinije's 3-pointer -- in overtime.
Happ also had 18 rebounds and three blocks. Hayes finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Wisconsin guard Brad Koenig tied the score at 53 with 1:25 remaining in regulation with a 3-pointer from the corner. Both teams had chances to win in the closing seconds, but Syracuse turned the ball over and Wisconsin forward Vitto Brown's last-second jumper hit the front of the rim.
Gbinije led the Orange (6-1) with 19 points. Wisconsin limited Syracuse to 35.7 percent shooting from the field and outrebounded the Orange 51-25.
The Badgers led 27-24 at halftime after using a 16-4 run to erase an early five-point deficit. Hayes sparked the rally with a 3-pointer from the key and a drive to the basket, and Koenig capped it with a 3-pointer from the corner that gave Wisconsin a 19-14 lead.
Led by backup guard Kaleb Joseph, the Orange ended the half on a 7-2 run to pull within three. Joseph, who played only eight minutes in Syracuse's Battle 4 Atlantis wins over Connecticut and Texas A&M, scored six of the Orange's last 10 points in the first half.
