No. 5 Duke 80, Syracuse 72: Jahlil Okafor recorded 23 points and 13 rebounds as the Blue Devils overcame an 11-point, first-half deficit to post an ACC road victory.
Okafor finished 10-of-15 from the field and his teammates combined to make 7-of-15 3-pointers as Duke (22-3, 9-3) won for the eighth time in nine games. Quinn Cook had 17 points and five assists, Justise Winslow added 12 points and seven rebounds and Tyus Jones chipped in 11 points, six rebounds and six assists.
Duke transfer Michael Gbinije led Syracuse (16-9, 7-5) with a career-high 27 points on 10-of-14 shooting. Tyler Roberson added 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Orange, who finished 6-of-13 from the foul line and were outrebounded 42-32.
Staring at a three-point halftime deficit, Duke scored 13 of the first 15 points of the second half, including four baskets by Okafor. The star freshman dunked with about 10 minutes left to put the Blue Devils ahead 61-50 before the Orange rallied within 66-62 with just under four minutes remaining.
The hosts' deficit was six when Roberson missed two foul shots with 2:08 left, and Okafor dunked on the other end to make it 70-62. Orange guard Kaleb Joseph missed a wide-open 3-pointer with just over a minute left as Syracuse shot 1-of-11 from behind the arc in the second half after going 7-of-11 in the first half.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Gbinije scored 19 points in the first half on 7-of-9 shooting, including 5-of-6 from 3-point range. ... Matt Jones led the Duke reserves with eight points. The Blue Devils' bench outscored the Orange reserves 15-0. ... Orange leading scorer and rebounder Rakeem Christmas struggled to 5-of-17 shooting, finishing with 11 points, six rebounds, five blocks and five assists.
