No. 24 West Virginia 86, College of Charleston 57: Jonathan Holton had 21 points and 10 rebounds to power the Mountaineers to their seventh straight win as they easily defeated the visiting Cougars.
Holton was 9-of-13 from the floor and had 10 rebounds, six on the offensive end, to go with four assists and three steals. Jaysean Paige scored 15 points, Juwan Staten had 10 and freshman Daxter Miles Jr. added nine and four steals for West Virginia (7-0). Devin Williams chipped in nine rebounds as the Mountaineers dominated the glass, outrebounding the Cougars 41-25, including 20-5 on the offensive end.
Evan Bailey came off the bench to score 13 points for College of Charleston (2-4). Donovan Gilmore also had 13 points while Joe Chealey added 10.
Gilmore dunked to open the second half, but that was the last basket the Cougars would have for the next eight minutes. West Virginia went on a 14-0 run, including seven points from Holton, during that span to lead 52-31 and then cruised the rest of the way.
Chealey scored on a layup to give Charleston the first points of the game but that was the Cougars’ only lead as the Mountaineers methodically pulled away for a 38-29 halftime advantage. Bailey’s jumper pulled the Cougars within 30-23 with 5:01 left in the half, but the Mountaineers held Charleston to a layup over the next four minutes to take a 36-25 lead.
GAME NOTEBOOK: West Virginia opened the second half with a 22-4 run that put it up 60-33. … The win was the 747th for Mountaineers head coach Bob Huggins, moving him past Phog Allen and Rollie Massimino for 14th on the all-time NCAA Division I list. … Six of West Virginia’s seven wins have been by double digits.
