Virginia Tech 71, Maryland-Eastern Shore 46: Justin Bibbs and Malik Muller each scored 15 points to lead the host Hokies to an easy win over the Hawks in Buzz Williams' first game as coach of Virginia Tech.
Muller had a perfect shooting night from the field, going 5-for-5, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range, for Virginia Tech (1-0). The Hokies shot 52.2 percent as a team, as Ahmed Hill chipped in with 11 points.
Ryan Andino scored 11 points to lead Maryland-Eastern Shore (0-1), which outrebounded Virginia Tech 35-33. Mike Myers had nine points, 10 rebounds and three assists for the Hawks, while Devin Martin added nine points before fouling out.
The Hokies jumped out quick, scoring the first seven points of the game and opening up a 22-9 advantage with under nine minutes to play in the first half. Virginia Tech cooled off a bit though, scoring just six points in the final eight minutes of the session, settling for a 10-point halftime advantage.
Bibbs scored six of the Hokies' first eight points of the second half, and the lead ballooned to 19 on Adam Smith's 3-pointer with 12:41 to play. The lead was 22 when the Hawks went on a scoring drought of 4:33 that ended all doubt about the game's outcome.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Ace Custis, one of the top scorers and rebounders in Virginia Tech history, was on the Maryland-Eastern Shore bench as an assistant coach. … Neither team shot well from the free-throw line, with the Hawks shooting 57.7 percent and the Hokies 58.6 percent. … Virginia Tech improved to 49-3 all-time in home openers, including a 10-1 record since joining the ACC in 2004.
