Virginia 65, Virginia Tech 45: Malcolm Brogdon scored a career-high 18 points to help the host Cavaliers remain a game out of first place in the ACC.
Brogdon, a 6-5 sophomore guard, also made a career-high four 3-pointers on five attempts from beyond the arc and Joe Harris added 12 points for Virginia (15-5, 6-1). Anthony Gill led the reserves with seven points and five rebounds.
Devin Wilson scored 11 of his team-high 12 points in the second half for Virginia Tech (8-11, 1-6). Jarell Eddie, Joey Van Zegeren and C.J. Barksdale added seven points apiece for the Hokies.
The Cavaliers doubled Virginia Tech’s points and field goals en route to building a 34-17 halftime lead. The game started to get away from the Hokies during a 10-minute stretch of the first half in which they were outscored 12-1.
Barksdale, Eddie and Cadarian Raines sank three straight jumpers early in the second half to pull Virginia Tech within 12, but that was as close as the Hokies would get. Ben Emelogu, the second-leading scorer for Virginia Tech, was questionable with an ankle injury, but scored six points off the bench, all in the first half.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Virginia is 6-1 in ACC play for the first time since 1982-83, Ralph Sampson’s senior season. …. For the first time in school history, the first six conference victories by the Cavaliers have been by double figures. …. The Cavaliers came in ranked fifth in the nation in scoring defense at 56.8 points.
