Greg Robbins scored a game-high 15 points as Richmond topped Rutgers, 58-53, in the third-place game of the Riviera Division at the Cancun Challenge in Cancun, Mexico, on Wednesday.
Darien Brothers added 10 points for the Spiders (4-2), who fell to Illinois in the Cancun opener on Tuesday.
The Scarlet Knights (3-3) dropped their Cancun opener to Illinois State and are battling some inconsistencies as they work three freshmen into the starting lineup.
Rutgers made it interesting in the final minute, cutting a 57-47 deficit with 37 seconds left to 57-52 seven seconds later after a pair of free throws, a steal and a 3-pointer by Austin Carroll. But Cedrick Lindsay split a pair of free throws and Carroll missed another chance from long range with under five seconds on the clock.
Richmond set a slow pace and confounded the young Scarlet Knights on the perimeter. Freshmen Eli Carter, Malick Kone and Myles Mack combined to shoot 5 of 21 for Rutgers.
The Spiders jumped out to a 17-2 lead and never trailed. The Scarlet Knights would draw as close as 33-32 early in the second half but an 11-2 run kept Richmond clear.
