Freshman Otto Porter scored 14 points – including the go-ahead putback with 1:42 left – and No. 12 Georgetown handed No. 4 Louisville its first loss of the season 71-68 on Wednesday and snapped the Cardinals' 20-game home winning streak.
Porter, who also had 14 rebounds, hit 3-of-4 free throws to seal the win in the Big East opener for both teams.
Markel Starks scored a career-high 20 points for Georgetown (11-1), which prevented Louisville from matching the best start in school history.
Kyle Kuric had 17 points and Peyton Siva added 15 for Louisville (12-1). The Cardinals suffered their first loss at the KFC Yum! Center since a 78-63 setback to instate rival Kentucky on New Year’s Eve last season.
Louisville may have been looking ahead to another New Year’s Eve matchup with No. 3 Kentucky in Lexington on Saturday. They led 35-32 at the half, but the Hoyas used a 24-8 run to take an 11-point lead. Starks scored 11 points during the run, which gave Georgetown a 63-52 advantage with 4:23 left.
That’s when the Cardinals, who rallied to win each of their last three games against lesser opponents, responded with an 11-0 spurt that tied it at 63 with 2:01 to play. However, Porter’s basket made it 65-63 and the Hoyas hung on.
Russ Smith’s 3-pointer cut the lead to 69-66 with 21 seconds left, but Porter sealed the win with a pair of free throws.
