Durrell Summers gave Michigan State a boost in its Big Ten opener and closed 2010 on a solid note.
Summers hit four of the Spartans’ eight 3-pointers and finished with 19 points as 19th-ranked Michigan State topped 13th-ranked Minnesota 71-62 on Friday at East Lansing, Mich.
Michigan State (9-4, 1-0 Big Ten) made sure its generous offense touched everyone. Draymond Green added 14 points, six rebounds and four assists and Delvon Roe and Korie Lucious each scored 11 points. Kalin Lucas had 10 points and seven assists while Roe added nine rebounds and Lucious dished out six assists.
After the Spartans scored six of the first seven points, Minnesota (11-3, 0-2) recovered for a 28-22 lead at intermission. The Golden Gophers maintained that slim lead until Summers hit a 3-pointer at the 12:56 mark of the second half, tying the score at 41-41.
It started an 8-0 run for the Spartans, who went up 46-41 and widened the cushion from there.
Trevor Mbakwe had 17 points and nine rebounds and Blake Hoffarber added 12 points for Minnesota.
