Freshman Joshua Smith scored a career-high 19 points, and UCLA snapped a four-game losing streak with a 72-61 victory over Cal Poly at the Pauley Pavilion Saturday night.
Smith, a 6-foot-10, 300-pounder, also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Reeves Nelson added 13 points for the Bruins.
Smith’s three-point play gave UCLA a 19-18 lead midway through the first half, and they never trailed again. The Bruins led 34-26 at the break.
UCLA (4-4) built a 55-38 advantage early in the second half on a 3-pointer by Tyler Honeycutt, but then went cold from the field and Cal Poly rolled off nine straight points to trim the margin to 55-47.
Malcolm Lee, playing after suffering a strained tendon in his right knee, ended the run with a 3-pointer, and the Mustangs (3-5) never got closer than seven the rest of the way.
The Mustangs, already dealing with depth issues, were forced to play with starters Will Donahue and Chris O’Brien hampered with foul trouble.
UCLA had lost four straight games, including its last one at Pauley Pavilion against Montana on Sunday.
David Hanson led Cal Poly with 18 points and Shawn Lewis added 13.
It was the first meeting between the two schools in 55 years.
