Astros 4, Diamondbacks 3: Jose Altuve had an RBI double and joined Dexter Fowler with three hits while Jarred Cosart tossed six solid innings as visiting Houston posted its 12th win in 16 contests.
Fowler, who also scored twice, recorded his third straight multi-hit performance and sixth in seven contests as the Astros snapped a nine-game losing streak against Arizona. Matt Dominguez went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Jason Castro added a run-scoring double in the victory.
Gerardo Parra scored twice while Paul Goldschmidt and Miguel Montero each drove in a run for the Diamondbacks, who fell for just the second time in seven contests. Josh Collmenter (4-3) suffered his first loss since April 20, permitting four runs (three earned) on seven hits in as many innings.
Fowler scored on a sacrifice fly and Jon Singleton came home on Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill's fielding error to stake Houston to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Altuve, who is riding an eight-game hitting streak, drilled a 1-0 changeup from Collmenter into center field to plate Fowler in the second and scored on Castro's double two batters later.
Cosart (5-5) allowed three runs on five hits and tied a career high with eight strikeouts before three relievers bridged the gap to Chad Qualls. The right-hander worked around a two-out double in the ninth by Ender Inciarte for his eighth save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Arizona LF David Peralta, who went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, failed to record a hit for the first time in eight contests to begin his career. ... Houston LHP Tony Sipp struck out three in 1 2/3 innings of relief despite being shuffled to play in right field for one batter. RHP Jerome Williams walked Goldschmidt before Sipp returned to the mound. ... The Diamondbacks activated J.J. Putz from the 15-day disabled list and recalled fellow RHP Will Harris from Triple-A Reno. Arizona also placed INF Eric Chavez on the DL with a left knee sprain.
