Padres 8, Phillies 2: Jedd Gyorko went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and Chase Headley went 3-for-5 with two RBIs as San Diego routed host Philadelphia in the opener of a three-game series.
Andrew Cashner (9-8) struck out seven and was charged with two runs and four hits in 7 2/3 innings to record his first victory since Aug. 2. The Padres have won four straight games and six of their last seven.
San Diego pushed across a first-inning run on Headley’s single before breaking the game open with three in the fourth and four in the fifth. Ronny Cedeno smacked a double into the left-field corner for one fourth-inning run and Rene Rivera added a two-run double into the right-center gap.
Gyorko, Headley, Kyle Blanks and Cedeno all had run-scoring singles in the fifth to boost the lead to 8-0. Cody Asche homered in the bottom of the fifth and the Phillies added a run in the eighth when Cesar Hernandez drew a bases-loaded walk against Padres reliever Dale Thayer.
Philadelphia’s Tyler Cloyd (2-4) started in place of an ill Roy Halladay and gave up seven runs and nine hits in four-plus innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Halladay was moved back to Thursday due to his illness and LHP Cliff Lee was moved up a day and will start Wednesday’s contest. … Cashner has allowed four earned runs in 28 2/3 innings over his last four outings. … Phillies C Cameron Rupp reached in the eighth on an infield single for his first major-league hit.
