Rockies 3, Mets 1: Jonathan Herrera scored on a passed ball in the
eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie as shorthanded Colorado defeated host
New York and denied R.A. Dickey from becoming the fourth 16-game winner in the majors.
Tyler Colvin homered and pinch hitter Ramon Hernandez delivered an RBI single in the ninth for Colorado, which has won six of its last eight games.
Dickey, who received a no-decision, allowed one run, three hits, walked two and struck out six in seven innings.
Herrera opened the eighth with a bunt single and advanced to
second on a throwing error by Josh Edgin (1-1). After Chris Nelson's
sacrifice bunt, Herrera scampered home when Kelly Shoppach couldn't handle Edgin's routine curveball.
Rex Brothers (7-2) earned the victory with 1 1/3 innings of relief. He
left with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth before Matt
Belisle came on to retire pinch hitter Jordany Valdespin on a close play at first base. Rafael Betancourt worked around a single and a walk in the
ninth inning for his 24th save in 29 chances to extend the Rockies'
bullpen scoreless streak to 18 innings.
The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. With two outs, David
Wright doubled into the left field corner, Ike Davis walked and Daniel Murphy
singled to left to score Wright.
Colorado tied it when Colvin delivered a shot into the second deck with one out in the fifth off Dickey.
The Rockies were missing outfielders Carlos Gonzalez (bereavement list)
and Eric Young Jr. (rib cage), along with infielder Josh Rutledge
(quadriceps). With Todd Helton (hip), Michael Cuddyer (oblique) and Troy Tulowitzki (groin) on the disabled list,
Colorado had only one player in Monday's lineup - Fowler - that was an
opening day starter.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Gonzalez is expected to return to the lineup Wednesday.
... Colorado starter Alex White allowed one run, three hits, walked two
and struck out four in four innings. He hasn't received a decision in his last five starts, but the Rockies have
won four times during that span. ... Dickey had struck out at least seven in
his previous five outings. ... Wright is 7-for-13 with four RBIs, six runs scored, three doubles and six walks in four
games against Colorado this season. ... RF Charlie Blackmon went 0-for-4
by grounding out to all four infielders. ... The Rockies improved to 27-51 all-time against the Mets in New York.
