Yankees 2, Blue Jays 1: Phil Hughes pitched seven strong innings and host New York evened its series with Toronto at one game apiece.

Nick Swisher and Curtis Granderson delivered two-out RBIs as the Yankees won for only the third time in eight games to maintain their 3 1/2-game lead atop the American League East.

Hughes (13-11) allowed one run on four hits while striking out five and walking three to improve to 10-3 this season at Yankee Stadium.

David Robertson pitched a perfect eighth inning and closer Rafael Soriano bounced back from Monday's blown save to earn his 34th save in 37 chances.

Blue Jays left-hander Ricky Romero (8-12) lost his fourth straight start and 11th consecutive decision despite allowing only two runs on five hits. He struck out six and walked two but remained winless since June 22.

Adeiny Hechavarria's first career homer accounted for the lone run for Toronto, which has lost eight of its last nine games.

Swisher's two-out single in the third, his 22nd RBI of the month, made it 1-0 and Granderson doubled the lead one inning later with a sacrifice fly.

Hechavarria got Toronto on the board in the fifth when he ripped an opposite-field homer about 10 rows deep into the right field stands to make it 2-1.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Hughes has allowed at least one homer in five straight starts and 30 on the season. ... Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista will undergo season-ending surgery on his left wrist next week. The procedure, to repair instability in the wrist, is expected to require a rehabilitation period of three to four months. The injury ended Bautista's bid to become the first player since Philadelphia's Mike Schmidt (1974-76) to lead the majors in homers three straight seasons. ... Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez took batting practice prior to Tuesday's game. He is recovering from a fractured left wrist suffered on July 24 and will need a rehab stint before the team activates him off the disabled list. ... RHP Marcus Stroman, Toronto's first-round pick in June's draft, was suspended 50 games for using the banned substance Methylhexaneamine. Stroman, who was pitching at Double-A New Hampshire, said he "unknowingly" ingested the stimulant from an over-the-counter supplement.
