Tigers 4, Yankees 3: Omir Santos, called up earlier in the week, delivered a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to lift host Detroit.
Miguel Cabrera belted a pair of mammoth home runs and added a double as the Tigers handed New York only its third loss in 10 games.
Santos' heroics came after he dropped a foul popup in the top of the ninth that kept the inning alive.
Brennan Boesch and Jhonny Peralta triggered the winning rally with one-out singles off David Phelps (1-2) before Santos lofted a deep fly ball to right for his first RBI since 2009.
Tigers closer Jose Valverde (3-1) earned the win despite a ninth-inning meltdown in which he hit two batters and walked two more, including Mark Teixeira to force in the tying run.
Cabrera's second solo shot, his 11th of the season, put the Tigers ahead 3-2 in the eighth. He also homered off Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda in the fourth to open the scoring.
Detroit starter Rick Porcello allowed one run on six hits in six innings but remained winless in his last five starts. Kuroda gave up two runs on seven hits in seven innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Yankees hitting coach Kevin Long was ejected in the seventh for arguing balls and strikes and manager Joe Girardi also got tossed for protesting Long's ejection. ... Tigers LF Don Kelly robbed Teixeira of a home run with a leaping catch at the wall in the fourth inning. ... Yankees reliever David Robertson, who was expected to take over the closer's role after Mariano Rivera was hurt, threw his first bullpen session since an oblique injury landed him on the 15-day disabled list on May 14. ... Cabrera hit his 12th and 13th homers in 35 career games against the Yankees.
