No. 8 Oklahoma State 69, Butler 67: Michael Cobbins blocked Elijah Brown’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer and the unbeaten Cowboys held on to win the semifinal at the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla.
Marcus Smart had 17 points and eight rebounds for Oklahoma State, but last season's Big 12 Player of the Year missed three free throws in the final minute that left the door open for Butler. Le’Bryan Nash scored 15 points and Kamari Murphy added 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench for the Cowboys (7-0), who will play No. 19 Memphis in Sunday’s championship game.
Brown scored 15 points off the bench to lead the Bulldogs (5-1). Alex Barlow added a career-high 12 points and Kameron Woods finished with 12 points and nine rebounds for Butler.
Oklahoma State led by nine before Butler guard Kellen Dunham sank a 3-pointer with 3 1/2 minutes left and the Bulldogs pulled within one on a putback by Khyle Marshall with two minutes remaining. Smart then missed three straight free throws but the Bulldogs couldn’t capitalize as Brown was denied on a contested drive and Marshall, a 55 percent free-throw shooter coming in, missed two foul shots with eight seconds left that would have given Butler a tie or the lead.
Nash got the rebound and made 1-of-2 at the line, setting up the final block by Cobbins. Marshall and Dunham, who combined for 62 points in the quarterfinal win against Washington State, combined for 17 points on 7-for-23 from the floor.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Oklahoma State came in averaging 99.7 points, second in the nation. … Barlow, who had just three 3-pointers on the season coming in, hit two in the first four minutes of the second half to cut a 14-point halftime deficit to seven. … The Cowboys, who entered tied for third in the nation at 47.7 percent from 3-point range, shot 4-for-15.
