South Florida 65, California 54: Victor Rudd led a balanced offense with 15 points and the Bulls led 36-13 at halftime en route to an easy victory over the Bears in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Anthony Collins added 12 points, Augustus Gilchrist 11 and Jawanza Poland 10 for 12th-seeded South Florida (21-13), which won its first NCAA tournament game by shooting 57 percent from the field and led by 12 in the first seven minutes.
South Florida, which led by as many as 32, plays No. 5 seed Temple in the second round of the Midwest Regional on Friday.
Harper Kamp registered 19 points for California (24-10), which lost four of its last five games.
South Florida, playing in its first NCAA game since 1992, scored the final 14 points of the first half. The Bulls were 16 for 24 from the field and held the Bears to 5 for 24 in the opening 20 minutes.
Collins made five of his six shots from the field and the Bulls were 4 for 7 from 3-point range and held California without a point the last nine minutes of the first half.
GAME NOTEBOOK: South Florida, which lost in its previous two appearances against Arizona and Georgetown, is the last Big East team to win an NCAA tournament game. … The Bulls have not allowed 58 points in a game since Feb. 4. … California dropped to 19-17 in the NCAA tournament. ... The 13 points allowed was a season low for a half against South Florida.
