Jawanza Poland, playing his first game of the season, scored all of his 13 points in the second half as South Florida pulled away for a 70-55 victory over visiting Cleveland State on Monday.
Poland, who was out because of a back injury and a two-game NCAA suspension for playing in unsanctioned summer league games, had three 3-pointers and a highlight-film dunk as the Bulls (7-5) snapped Cleveland State’s five-game win streak.
Augustus Gilchrist had 12 points and eight rebounds for South Florida, which is 7-0 at home. Ron Anderson Jr., hampered by illness of late, contributed 11 points, and Anthony Collins had 11 points and six assists for the Bulls.
Tim Kamczyc led the way with 14 points and Trevon Harmon had 11 for Cleveland State (10-2).
South Florida trailed 19-13 with 10:38 left in the first half, but held Cleveland State to two points the rest of the way for a 25-21 halftime lead. The Bulls' Toarlyn Fitzpatrick had seven of his nine points in the first 20 minutes.
Cleveland State made only 22-of-63 from the field and leading scorer D’Aundray Brown was held to 3-of-12 shooting and nine points.
