DENVER – Jimmer Fredette scored 34 points and had seven 3-point baskets to help Brigham Young advance to the Sweet 16 with a convincing 89-67 victory over Gonzaga on Saturday.
Jackson Emery added 16 points for the third-seeded Cougars (32-4), who face Florida in the Southeast Regional semifinals in New Orleans on Thursday.
Elias Harris and Steven Gray scored 18 points apiece, and Robert Sacre had 17 points for 11th-seeded Gonzaga (25-10), which had a 10-game winning streak snapped.
The Cougars will be making their first Sweet 16 appearance since 1981, when Danny Ainge was the team’s superstar guard.
Fredette was 7 of 13 from behind the arc as BYU made 14-of-29 3-point attempts while rolling to an easier than expected victory.

The Cougars regained control with 12 straight points to build the lead to 20 with 8:21 to play. Fredette and Noah Hartsock hit back-to-back 3-pointers to end the run.
Hartsock scored 13 points and Stephen Rogers added 10 points for BYU.
Fredette had 14 first-half points and hit four 3-pointers as BYU took a 45-38 halftime lead.
