Malcolm Delaney led four players in double figures as Virginia Tech stayed hot, downing N.C. State 77-69 on Wednesday in Raleigh, N.C.
Delaney scored 22 points for the Hokies (15-6, 5-3 ACC), who won for the fifth time in six games. Allowing 60.7 points per game coming in (25th in the nation), the Hokies held N.C. State to 38.6 percent shooting.
The Hokies used an 11-2 run midway through the first half to open a 25-14 lead on Terrell Bell’s dunk with 7:49 left in the half. Manny Atkins came off the bench with eight first-half points in three minutes, the last two on a layup with 1:52 to go before halftime for a 38-22 Virginia Tech advantage.
Down 39-26 at halftime, N.C. State (12-10, 2-6 ACC) cut the deficit to 46-37 on 3-pointers from Scott Wood and C.J. Williams five minutes into the second half. The Wolfpack drew within six on Lorenzo Brown’s three-point play with 4:35 to go but could get no closer.
Jeff Allen added 15 points and 11 rebounds for Virginia Tech. Bell and Erick Green each added 13 points, and Victor Davila pulled down 13 rebounds.
C.J. Leslie scored 18 points to lead the Wolfpack, who have lost six of their past seven.
Virginia Tech plays at Boston College on Saturday. N.C. State travels to No. 5 Duke on Saturday.
